Okay, here is the story....

In October 2010, I researched on-line rare and valuable stamps. I came upon a website that listed the stamps both photograph and description. I proceeded to copy and paste each one into a word document and used it as a reference while sorting the first batch.

The stamp in question is the Blue, German (Deutfches Reich) with the 30 Saufend overprint. I cannot seam to match up the stamp and overprint in my new 1999 Scott Cat. AND I went back to that same website and the stamp is gone. ?

My on-line research show the stamp is not worth much. But why was it on that list?? Could it have been a temporary cruel joke? lol

Any info would be great! Thanks Amy!

TravelBugAntiques, I agree with Cjd that it looks like #248 and for mint hinged it is valued at a few cents. If it is MNH or inverted overprint then it is considerably more valuable.

You are correct CJD, it is Scott #248 with values of .20˘ unused and $1.10 used. If perhaps the OP ran across this item on ebay which someone was trying to sell it in the Thousands of Dollars claiming it is a very rare piece, ignore it.....pure fiction. If indeed this is the case, follow the sale of the item as the seller purchased it for under $3.00 and is now trying to sell it for $4,000.00 ballpark, I don't remember the exact price. Many collectors have contacted ebay regarding this seller. On another note, I hope the Canadian Bluenose shown in the picture doesn't have a big crease in it.

My old Scott says 248. I don't see any unusual varieties listed in the catalogues, other than inverted overprint. Maybe they took it off because someone posted it in error?

Excellent.. well not excellent. lol. But, I see it now in the catalogue. Thanks! I have the stamp and the poor baby is currently hinged in a book. However, It has never been used and has the original gum. It's in real good shape.

Thanks for giving me some clarity on the subject!

Catalogue value in Scott doesn't tell the whole story.

First, a page full of the inflation issues has eye appeal, and an interesting history, and plenty of stamps with higher CV have neither.

Second, and this is an area for the specialists, there are varieties to some of the inflation issues that reward flyspecking, if that is your sort of thing. Those varieties go unmentioned in Scott, which to a lot of collectors means they don't exist.

There are several German stamps from this period which have a high CV if used or if they have a diffrent watermark than the normal.

Unfortunately, this doesn't necessarily translate into hard cash. I found a Germania issue with a network watermark that has a CV of 110 Euros. But I only got $1.49 or so for it when I auctioned it on ebay.

So even if this was a stamp with a high CV, it doesn't mean that you'd end up getting more than a few dollars for it.

There just doesn't appear to be much demand for such specialist items these days.
