The pix of the grills are great. They are the first ones I've been able to see. This site sure is a great learning tool because of the knowledgeable members. Thanks. |

I find it hard to pass up any of the 1869s when I find them on an advertising cover. This one was in an APS circuit box. So far I have not been able to find out much about the activities of the "Southern Land Agency" during the Reconstruction Era in Richmond, Virginia (which had been the capital of the Confederate States of America). |

This c.1869 cover sent from Poultney, Vt. carries an advertisement for Wood's Mowers and Reapers, which won two gold medals at the 1867 Paris Exposition. The illustration of the medal shows a portrait of Emperor Napoleon III. I sure wish I had the gold medal to go along with the cover!
However I do have an 1867 silver 5 franc crown minted in Paris with a very similar portrait of Napoleon III. Interestingly, the 3c locomotive stamp has a guide line across the top. |

Tom:
This thread is great -- every time I come back to it, I go over all the pictures again and again. Over the years, I've been slowing trying to acquire the 1869 stamps (no covers for me) for my collection. I have a pretty good "short set" but don't know that I'll ever get them all.
If you don't mind my asking, about how many 1869 covers do you have? It seems like this is a real interest/specialty for you.

Here's a very unusual combination paying the 3c postage plus 15c registration fee: Wasioja, MN to Winona, MN. October 25, 1869. Enjoy. Chip |

Wow chipg that is a fantastic cover! KirkS Thank you! Each time I get a new 1869 cover I like them all I little more, so yes indeed it has become a focus of mine. I am on the lookout for 1869 covers with unusual combinations, destinations, and advertising. Almost all of of what I have are in this thread. I will count them up and let you know. |

KirkS - I counted 38 covers in my collection with 1869s on them. I'm thinking of going to the WALPEX show in Lexington, Mass. this weekend to hunt for another. |

Wow Tom, 38 covers -- that's really amazing.
I'll bet you lie awake nights fantasizing about finding a 90˘ cover at a garage sale

Tom Those covers are positively stunning, I've gone back and looked at them a couple times to take it all in. It even got me reading up on the 1869 pictorials. I didn't know it was the first issue that used any design other than busts of famous Americans. Wonderful. |

Yes, Western -- ergo they are considered by many collectors to be the first "commemorative" stamps issued by the US.

Great cover I_Love_Stamps! Harper Hospital (now Harper University Hospital) was founded in Detroit in 1863. One of its first tasks was treating wounded Civil War soldiers. It is still in operation today.
Thanks Western1688! |
