OK, so I'm seeing some beautiful scans from some of you folks. But every time I try to upload an image, it doesn't let me import anything larger than 90k, which presents itself on the screen as quite small, and hard to see?
How come the rest of you collectors are able to import larger images? I'm at loose ends. What's your secret?

No secret here. I always stay under about 100.
others use flikr, photobucket, etc for large scans.
With my dialup, I usually don't try to view those.

EDIT -- There seems to be an art, however, to resizing properly.
I usually just go to lower dpi and rescan rather than edit the scan.

EDIT again -- I looked at your Canada excise photo. At 18kb and 72dpi you could probably have gone to 300 dpi and still been under the limit. Sometime I also reduce from 256 to 16 colors to get the size down.
Hope that helps.

James:

First, adjust the DPI setting of your scans, and make sure you crop your scans to include only the stamp/area you wish to post.

Most photos & images you see on the web are 72 dpi. But sometimes when you're trying to show detail of a stamp, that's a little low. On the other extreme, modern scanners that default to 1200 dpi are just too hi-res. You'll never get the filesize under a megabyte.

There's a tutorial on the left about uploading photos. Also, try the search function to find other threads and discussions.

A few of the members here prefer to post their scans on a different picture sharing site and post links to the larger off-site images. In my opinion, this is less desirable because sometimes the images disappear over time and ruin older threads for new members. However, I confess that on occasion, I too have used off-site image storage.

Here's a tutorial I did a while back ....

Finally, I'll say that it took every SCF member a week or two to figure out the best way to post images -- don't get discouraged; you'll get the hang of it soon.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep experimenting. Managed a good size (see - us airmail wrong colour?) but not sure how I arrived at it. Often the website just won't let me upload. But I'm getting closer!

photobucket has issues for people later. see the earlier links. If you change the extension, move the file, or it goes over their established time, there is no longer a picture associated.

Just keep plugging at this. It works. I scan with Epson scanner at 600 dpi and "best" w/ 48 bit color. I frame the image really tight, and on individual stamps I rarely have to resize. Larger images, you can scan the same way, and click on resize to med ? or whatever to bring the total under the 100 kb allowed to upload here.
