Hi Everyone,

I came across this cover

and I noticed it had been cancelled twice.

Looking closer I noticed that date on the black cancel is February 4th, 1982 but the red one is February 4th 1981.

How often does this happen? Does an error like this change the value? Is there any way to find out which year is the correct one?

Thanks in advance for any help, comments or info.

Lucky

My guess is that one of the cancels is an error. Someone put the wrong year into the canceller.

My guess is that the mail clerk in whatever business used the postage meter had simply dialed in the wrong year. It's easy to do and probably has no value above curiosity status. By rights, the USPS could have returned the piece noting the wrong year, but in all likelihood they just let it go through. Since metered mail typically does not require a postmark, I suspect the USPS simply put it through the canceller to confirm the correct year. The USPS (black) postmark would more than likely be the correct year.

Probably someone was still stuck in the previous year (you know how the first week of the year you keep writing down the previous year).

I like it. As wt1 stated, one of these is not a cancel, but metered postage (in red). I do tend to hold on to any cancelled meters I run into, as it is not too often that they are cancelled (at least until I run out of storage space in the attic).

Its nice to see that some post office employees take their job seriously enough to correct a date error. Kudos to diligent postal workers.

That's a ripper cover Lucky,
very collectible to some people I may add,
deserves a page by itself with explanation in your album.

Cancellation errors don't happen that often. I have a few with a cancellation that predates the 1st day of issue. When I do find one, its usually early January when the clerk forgets to gange the year.
