The stamps of all foreign addressed mail
that passed through the NY post office
1871 to 1877 were cancelled in the shape
of fancy stars and designed usually in a circle.
There are about 100 different shapes.

Highly collectible Smauggie,
yours may be valuable.
I don't recall ever seeing one in the flesh.

It would help I suppose if I had paid closer attention to the date. My stamp was printed after that time frame.

All in all, though, a curious melange (do adopt your word of the day) of cancellations, and a GT perfin (Guaranty Trust Corp in NY, NY, USA).

The 2011 Scott Specialized U.S. says that "this group of handstamps totals about 200 different fancy stars, geometric designs, wheels conventionalized flowers, etc., the majority within a circle 26-29 mm in diameter."

Sadly, I don't have any...yet.

Ah thanks,
mine was from Minkus book 1951,
so they found a further 100 in the last 60 years.
Smauggie definitely a melange (spoken with french accent),
hard to read that as a star config.

Gorgeous cover, Russ. I only have one of the New York cancels, on a 5 cent Taylor, off cover.

Question for you, gents. Were these applied with rubber, cork or metal?

Edit: Might this be one?

I did see it in the flesh. Handled it even. Considering a bid as it is on auction.

This is a great online version of an exhibit on the subject.

This exhibit was put together with the help of Richard Frajola. Here is a link to the exhibit in a downloadable PDF format

Marvelous stuff Russ,
now can enjoy in luxury.
Thank you.

These fellows, the likes of Mr. Frajola and Mr. Jay Carrigan for example
they amaze me with the quality and depth of their studies,
I wonder where they get their time,
but I am glad they do.
