How many time zones are there across the USA?
And where does our SCF time fit in?

Does Canada have the same time zones?

As I finish this post it is 9.10pm 4.1.11 on SCF.
In Queensland Australia which is on
the east coast the time is now 11.10am 4.2.11 EST

An interested KGV.

Board time is Eastern time zone, which includes New York and Washington, D.C. The continental U.S. spans four time zones, Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific (east to west). This doesn't take into account Alaska and Hawaii, but they probably don't fit in with what you're asking?

KGV, Canada has two additional time zones - Atlantic and Newfoundland time zones on the east coast.

Thanks heaps for the answers.
It helps to know these things at times.

So with the USA basically having 4 time zones
does that mean they are an hour apart,
being 3hrs different from the east coast to the west coast?

Australia has 3 time zones from the east coast to the west
coast and the time difference is 2hrs.

How the other half live. KGV

KGV, the following link shows the world time zones and looking at the US it shows the four time zones across the continent.

You are correct, KGV. There are 3 hours between the US East coast and West coast. But at least one state does not observe Daylight Savings time and as such, is not in sync with the rest of the US.

Of course, the most impressive number of time zones for a single country is the 8 zones across Russia (actually 9, counting Kaliningrad). I have always been fascinated with those places (countries) which are the oddballs. With a 30 minute difference, or I think that there is one with a 45 minute difference.

Is the Newfoundland time zone in Canada a full hour difference? or only a half hour?

Humpy:

The "default" time zone is 1 hours -- the others are unusual exceptions.

Thanks to all!
I find this topic very interesting to know how
our forum friends fit into what day and hour.

As A Queenslander we do not have daylight saving time
and are out of step with the rest of the east coast of Australia.
But the daylight difference between summer and
winter here is not a great deal.
So what daylight would we save?

Yes some exceptions are some places in Indiana where the time you leave for work is after youve arrived there. I think there is also some places in Austrailia that are only 1/2 hour out of whack with the rest of the time zone

Since 1949, the People's Republic of China has officially used a unified time zone, even though geographically the country "spans" 5 time zones.

Timezones is an incredibly complicated subject. If you just want to know roughly what time it is somewhere, the answers above are good enough. If you're trying to translate documents, you're in for a rude awakening. Aside from having at least 4 international standards, and 100 non-standard versions, there are multiple timezones in some of the standards that use the same name. For example, there's an EST in the United States and Australia. Now go through an international company's documents for the last umpteen years for some real fun, because the time zones for an area can change over time. Some of the more interesting complications have been mentioned, such as 1/2 hour differences, and daylight savings which can change in any year for any town.

Quite true, Austalia's time zones are weird. There are 3 roughly equal size time zones across the country, eastern, central and western. Yet the central time zone is only half hour behind the eastern, while the western is 2 hours. Why isn't the central 1 hour difference??

During Daylight savings it's even more complicated, with Queensland and Northern Territory not having DST.
