I found a lynx skull, once, on one of my outdoor rambles. A less than properly grateful and adoring child put it on a bookshelf and named it "Pete the Relic".
In the present, a spawn of said child did make the suggestion that I use that as an avatar.
I didn't.

I do like it much better when the user name is similar to the real name. bobmill = Bob Mill. No problems.
But something like fishjackandthemiller8866 from Dennis The Man (fictitious names) and the mail come signed Mary from M & J Jones is a bit hard on the old noggin.
There is always the balance between having a really cool user name and one that is easy to remember and spell and short enough to appear in all areas of the listing and also not be confused with other's names.
I have read that the human brain is capable of having room to store info on about 250 close friends and once it overflows it becomes a task and hard and tedious on the mind and thus easily forgotten. Hard not to do in this worldwide internet age me thinks.
Perhaps even having a logo or picture associated with one's name is a help (and it is) but when they are similar to other's pictures it causes even more confusion at times.
But I do like to play chess, yes, of course. Now, was it your move or mine? |

There's something to be said for protecting one's anonymity ... especially women and children. Giving one's name and often times location can potentially lead to security issues. Even on a forum like this, you have to be careful. Some of us have high $$ collections and giving too much information could create a securty risk should some bad guy decide to look you up in a phone directory.
As for me? I'm a 41 year old male. 6'1" tall, 250lbs and a hunter. I don't worry too much about myself ...

Rileysan,
Stamp security is always an issue. Never leave stamp magazines where others you don't know can get the address off it. Don't discuss your hobbies with strangers. Keep your prised possessions secure. I'm old, ride a motorcycle, enjoy the shooting sports and keep my stamp collection in my gun safe. All anyone need do is get past my 3 dogs, my .357 and they got it made. |
