Have you read the latest? The "wrong" Statue of Liberty is depicted on the latest US stamp:

An embarrassment for the USPS, yet they still "like it" and will continue to issue it.

Now THAT'S funny. I like that they crossed out the word 'forever' in the photo of the stamp.Because we all know, nothing is forever in Vegas.

You think they could have used a better copy like the small one in the river in Paris Framce.

They could have used one of the two miniature (yet extremely accurate) versions donated to the Canal Zone.

The Times quotes the postal service as saying it regrets the mistake and will try to prevent such errors in the future, but likes the stamp and does not plan to remove it from circulation.

Yeah, right. The free-for-all at the post office would look like a black-friday opening at Wal-mart if they tried to pull it from circulation!

The interesting thing is that they have already issued the coils; just this past week they issued an ATM Booklet; and now another variant, the regular two-sided booklet is scheduled to be issued in September 2011. If they "like it" (the USPS, that is), I suppose they will move forward with all of these varieties of the Statue of Liberty Stamp.

Bottom line is probably the "bottom line". They are all printed and ready for release and therefore it would be too expensive in the budget-tight USPS to destroy and re-issue even the ones that haven't "hit the streets" yet ... and as mentioned above ... there would be a run to get the existing stock from the USPS if they were to change the design.

One final thought: Maybe they should change the location of issue of the September 2011 release of the two-sided booklet to Las Vegas, Nevada!

Nice articles (blogs) on the subject, with a look back at other US stamp blunders (some of which I had forgotten about):

Went to my local post office today seeking some of the new issues for the increased postal rates. In the process, the clerk asked me if I collected stamps.

Apparently a customer recently asked if he could get an example of the coil of the US Flag/Statue of Liberty Stamp alternating coil stamps, the latter of which has recently been making headlines, but didn't want to buy an entire coil roll at $44.

The clerk saved a pair of coil stamps for him (bought back from a friend who did buy a roll) and saved them for the collector, but he never returned for them ... so I was able to get them! You can't even get these through Kansas City without buying a full roll at $44, so I lucked out and got my collectible examples for a mere 88 cents!

I believe they are Scott 4490-4491 (Avery Variety; Die Cut Perf. 8.5):

Interesting news story and really highlights the inattention at the PO today.

Hopefully the PO will use this stamp as a wakeup call to tighten standards and us collectors will at least have an interesting stamp to talk about, but somehow I don't see that as being the case!

An interesting sideline to the publicity of the Statue of Liberty Stamp:

CBS News New York has a website poll today asking people whether the USPS should keep or change the "mistaken" Statue of Liberty stamp. The responses (so far) with 2884 votes counted are 56.1% (1617 votes) to change it; and 43.9% (1267 votes) to keep it as it is.

That poll was surprising to me, as I would have thought it would be reversed, but I guess you have to take into consideration that the poll is regionalized to NY, many of whom hold dear the "real" Statue of Liberty" as a New York City landmark.

How cool is the postmaster letting me go through a partial roll, finding the plate number single and then letting me tear off the strip of 5 with the number on the middle stamp? I love my little post office.
