Sheesh, how many collectors get the 30 cent bicolor from the 1869 issue as their first stamp. I should have been so lucky. I still don't have it.

I recall the first visit to a stamp store and the overwhelming array of stamps available for purchase. As a young boy with a very small allowance, I had to limit my options so I purchased little envelopes containing interest stamps from all around the world. I still have many of these envelopes and have attached as scan of one of the first I purchased.

I don't recall which stamp was my first, but I do know which stamp was my first 19th century stamp ... a Scott 231, 2c Columbian out of a Kiloware box at a monthly stamp club I attended as a kid. I was so excited to have a stamp from the 1800s, that I took it to school to show to all of my friends. I don't think that stamp fared too well ...

My first stamp is actually a full sheet of Costa Rica C-120 from a second hand store. They were in a picture frame and I paid $4.50 for them back in 1968.

Mine was a lot more recent giveaway from my school teacher. Just loved the colors and odd shape of it.
