I do like the idea of a gallery. I would spend alot of time viewing every ones stamps and covers.

But been doing alot of coding my self I know it can be hard to get it going and may take some time to get it working right to hold a large number of images.

I've also been snooping around the coin forum.

I think a stamp gallery would be a great idea!

I've seen some great looking stamps and covers here in my short tenure as a member. It would be a nice resource to have them archived all in one place.

Can someone explain to me what a gallery is? Also a reference gallery? Is it just for looking at stamps, etc., like one looks at art in an art gallery? What would be the purpose for a gallery? OK, ... enough questions.

A references gallery
Would be a page(s)of stamps to help in the identification of;
Water marks, papers, dictionary of stamps terms.
An illustrated identifier,
I will give a few examples later today.

I would like to see something move to establishing this gallery.
djd, ideas are good.
Beware of possible copy-write infringements like posting Scott's Identifier.
Gallery sub divided into a few categories like:
Watermarks,
Precancels,
Rare/uncommon
Local Posts
Covers

But have limits like lets not show the entire USA stamp catalog.
Common items in general should be avoided.

This is a very interesting idea, though not a small project by any means. It would take an army of OCD people with lots of stamps and lots of time...

With the appropriate meta-data added for each image, it would be easily searchable by data range, cat. number range, denomination, ... This would be very useful for identification to say the least. I expect this project would never end, in part due to new issues, but also due to the sheer number of stamps and their variations in existence. Not to mention the difficulty of finding particular issues.

Something like this could potentially be commercialized to support the board if it really became extensive and easy to use.

Just my thoughts,
Clark

I think we have plenty of collectors whom would be able to submit content to a Gallery from a wide source of materials. This sounds like an interesting feature that would be perpetual as long as their are members to support it.

How many members do we have, anyway?

as promised
This stamp in the gallery could be used as a guide to identify
early Finland stamps from the Russian issues, and some Poland.

The differences here are in the currency.
The Russian stamps are inscribed in Kopecks or Rubles.
The Finnish in Pennia.
other differences are in the Inscription"Markka or Markkaa.
This is just an example of how the gallery could work.

If someone has a copy of Russia (Illustration, A8)
could you scan and sent to me or post it in this thread?
I will show the differences to the above.

Thank you
