Just very interested.

As a used collector I do not have a re-gummed stamp.
Or have I seen one up close.

Always Happy Stamping. KGV

I, too, have wondered just how you tell if a stamp has been regummed.

I'll be happy to show one once I get home from work. I have copies of US 240 with orginal gum and regummed. The difference is significant.

If it's been regummed with Juicy Fruit, then Fred did it.

Sorry, I'm over-late in responding to this thread. There was a playoff basketball game tonight I couldn't miss

Anyways, I tried photographing my stamps for a comparison of original gum vs regummed. However, they look terrible, so I've resorted to borrowing from a website.

Along with the photos, I've borrowed a couple of paragraphs as well ...

"The stamp on the left has been regummed and the one on the right has original gum. If you look closely, you can see the 'feathering' of the perfs on the stamp with original gum and traces of the 'after market' gum on the one on the left."

Here's a close-up of the two stamps:

"Another sign that a stamp has been regummed is if you lightly run you finger across the perfs and they feel stiff or sharp, it is a good indication that the stamp has been regummed. What you should feel is the "feathering" of the perfs from having been separated without any extra gum having seeped into the paper fibers. Again, keep in mind that stamps were perforated AFTER having been originally gummed. This method is not foolproof but, after you gain some experience in detecting the presence of regumming, you will get a feel for it"

Here's another example ...

These are only a couple of examples of regummed stamps. Not all regummed stamps look the same. Some are very good. The best advise I can give is to get a feel for the real thing. Once you get a feel for that, detecting fakes will become relatively easy.

Top Stuff Rileysan! Thanks heaps!

A very clear and easy to understand explanation.
I feel confident that I could pick a re-gum now.

I wonder how many people are checking their MNH's
This information is going to help many people.

Exciting outcome! Thanks again! John

Oh, a regummer is not beyond adding a little kiss of a hinge, or a bit of remnant to hide a flaw. Not every crook looks to hit a home run everytime...singles and doubles score runs, too. (I would translate that into Cricket, but... )

Washed cancels, repairs, stuck stamps, overprints that have been fooled with...the list of possible candidates is long, and regumming is cheap, so be careful when looking at any nicer stamp.

And know that a regummer is not beyond reperfing in an effort to minimize the clues shown above. Hey, if you're "fixing" a straightedge anyway, ...

On a related not, another trick is to "file" the perfs in order to make the fibers of the paper feather out, but this is a lot of work and usually reserved for more valuable stamps which could net hundreds or thousands of $$ if never hinged ...
