What you have there looks to be a 37-E1, But I only it to have been printed on India paper, Thin and stiff. Possabaly someone has rebacked it?

This looks like an authentic proof.

Just a couple of comments about locating this in a catalogue ...
1) This is a proof and will not be listed with the standard postage in the Scott catalogue
2) If you're not using a Scott Specialized catalogue, get one. It's the best source for information on classic US stamps.
3) If you don't mind my asking, what did you pay for it?

I don't have my catalogue in front of me, but I feel confident this entire set was available on card. This is either 37-p3 or 37-p4 ... I don't recall which one is on card stock.

My first instinct was legit proof and beautiful or handsome well just plain SWEEEEEET! And a nascar fan on top of that!! You may need to get it certified before sale but I am sure it will do well if legitimized. Give it a few hours and some others will chime in with details and I'm sure Rileysan will dig it up once he has a chance. Now something tells me this isn't the only interesting item you have so feel free to post away and you may make it to the july Daytona race afterall (although I think bristol would be fun as well. Hmmmm an aussie and canadian into nascar-- whats the world coming to . Boogity boogity boogity lets go racin boys!!

I don't know why it hadn't occurred to me to bring one of my old specialized catalogues to work. No one would care, and even if they did, they wouldn't notice it among the bookshelves full of endless scientific catalogues and metallurgical books.

There is an imperforate of that stamp but the ink colour is red lilac #37c but your one looks Gray from the scan

After searching through all the options, I believe I have the answer to this mystery.

I'll list the options in order:


1) 37P3, lilac, on India paper. $1250
2) 37P,c. lilac, on stamp paper. $1500
3) 45P(1, 2, 3, or 4) Blackish Violet. 1 = Large die, 2 = small die, 3 = India paper, 4 = card stock.

45P1 - $325
45P2 - $350
45P3 - $90
45P4 - $50

4) 37TC5, Violet Black, wove paper. There are 9 color varieties of this Color Trial Proof. I chose not to list them all since all but one are on the same paper and have the same cat value. $600 (the black Color Trial proof was available in Large die.

Now we have all the pieces. What puts them in place is the following statement from the Scott catalogue:

"Plate proofs of 24p to 39p are from the original plates. They may be distinguished from the 40p to 47p by the type in the case of the 1c, 3c, 10c, and 12c and by the color in the case of the 5c, 24c, 30c, and 90c."

Based on the color, paper, and statement from Scott, this stamp is a 45P4 and has a value of $50.

I hate this getting old****the old gary matter just does not seem to work as well as when I was 40.
All that being said if my memory is correct, razersedge's comment about the only 37 on card stock is the 37c, but was only in red lilac or maybe just lilac.

About the A17 and imperf's... Actually I saw a certified Sc#45 imperf at auction a few weeks ago... it sold for almost as much as my house is worth. And I live in San Diego
