It seems the USPS is making their "profit" off the little guy/little old lady who mails few things and needs an envelope at the very point that they buy a postage stamp, so they pay for it (dearly).
It confuses me to no end to figure out why they charge so much for a plain 6-3/4 or 10 envelope, when I can pickup as many self-stick priority or express mail boxes and envelopes and labels at no cost. If the post office really wanted to make a profit, that's what they should be charging for.
Also, consider the "Stamps by Mail" brochure in local post offices. You can order stamps at no cost. No shipping costs and no mailing costs, as a postage paid envelope is provided. It seems that's another money-loser to the post office. (Or maybe the cost of the stamped envelopes subsidizes some of these cost?)
