I have this little cover in one of my albums and was wondering if the cancel is common? Does W.I. stand for a town or post office? Roughly what time span was this mailed?

These cancels were adopted in 1893
to cancel letters and circulars in "imitation typing"
ie copied not printed.
My guess is that it an area code machine cancel
and area of London.

Imitation printing? Does that mean old-time junk mail?

Nells250, I started the below listed thread a month ago with several unidentified thriangular postmarks shown. I am still trying to determine what these are and will keep yours in mind. I have a early copy of Collect British Postmarks coming in the mail and expect to take delivery of same this week. Hopefully triangle postmarks will be contained within.
Regards
Mike

No, I don't think so,
this was progress in processing a subscription database.
If one belonged to a particular group
that produced a monthly, quarterly magazine
(eg stamp price lists, information catalogue)
then addressing was via a "roneo" style system
often identified by the purple printing.

Of course it will depend on your own
perception of junk mail.
In my opinion junk mail didn't really arrive in our
postboxes until the 1960's.

The development of the "roneo" "mimeograph"

Looking through my library,
I think this is a later style mimeograph
production used in one of our stamp clubs.

This was right on the cusp of computer
produced material.
I always recall the "chugging" sounds of the
mimeograph as the office girl turned the handle
that introduced the page, and spat out the
previous copy.

The W.I. is Wigan Post Office.

Here are lists of telegraph codes which were used for these cancels upto 1924. Post offices are specified, which is useful.

Telegraphic Codes A-L http://strowger-net.telefoonmuseum....elistal.html

Telegraphic Codes M-Z http://strowger-net.telefoonmuseum....elistmz.html

I remember that purple text on all my grade school pages from what was called a "ditto Machine" There was always a strong odor I believe from the alcohol used to speed up the drying process.

Forgive my ignorance on the subject, especially since I am a railfan... Does that list mean this envelope was cancelled at a train station? Not sure I quite understand the use of the codes...
