A cylinder block is a block of four (two bilingual pairs) showing the printing cylinder number in the margin.

The war effort block of 12 is an arrow block - if you look in the slogans on the top margin there is a printed arrow show where the sheets should be separated.

Nice blocks StampStudy.

I wasn't previously aware of the slogans on the margins of the War Effort stamps.

Thanks for sharing.

So is this the same thing as a plate block?

The arrow block is rouletted vertically. The rouletting was used because it was too difficult to change the current perforating apparatus on the printing system to suit the smaller format of the stamps. This one is rouletted 6.5

That last post answered my question of why there was a combination of rouletting and perforating on the arrow block.

I suppose the small format stamps were an attempt to save paper during the war???

You are correct - it was used to save paper. The total paper saved amounted to 556,086,280 stamps during 1942 - 1944.

This is a wonderful set to collect as each stamp has multiple printings (Identifiable by marginal pieces), varieties and various colour shades.

The block of 12 above is from printing 4 or 5 because of the retouched top row.
