I recently took part in a stamp swap (not here). Each user was to send 30 used stamps to the others, all commemoratives and NO CTO's

I received my trade today from Russia, they all appear to be CTO's. I really do not know much about these kind of stamps or Russian stamps- when I did a search on ebay for Russian stamps, many appeared to look like CTO's to me with the corner cancel in the corner, very similar to the ones that I have. And they were identified as Commemoratives.

Am I misidentifying these as CTO's (is this what all cancelled Russian stamps look like and could the person have made an honest mistake? I am really new to this and am hesitant to call this person out and would appreciate any suggestions - the stamps are quite attractive but on the other hand I have spent numerous hours (and $$) soaking stamps to trade :(
Thanks for any input!

Do they have gum on the back? If so, then definitely CTO's.

The great majority of the supply of "used" Russian stamps of the mid-1940s through 1980s are all CTOs. I am referring to the supply OUTSIDE of Russia. A collection of genuine postally used Russian stamps of that era takes a good deal of effort.

Thanks for your reply khj - here are the scans. He threw in a few from other countries as well. Most have gum on the back but a few are hard to tell.

Noooooo, just a ton of definitives :(
Most of the time the cover is just as exciting as what's inside - I was really looking forward to this trade as some of the postcards that I have received from Russia are covered in lovely stamps!

I will just avoid trading with this particular person in the future.

Of the canceled stamps in your pic, I see only 2 that are likely genuine postally used, and another 2-4 possibles. The rest of the canceled stamps, including the Cuban, Malagasy... are almost certainly CTO or favor-canceled.

I, too, would be extremely disappointed to receive Russian CTOs in a trade from Russia.

I agree with khj. Just few real used (Row1#3, row 3#1, row5#3, and possibly row2#4 and row4#4-5), the rest are obious CTO.

I'd definitely notify the swap maintainer about this; otherwise he/she will continue the bad practice with other traders.

Thank you all, I wanted to make sure that I knew what I had before saying anything ~will definitely let the mod there know. Fortunately this is not the norm and most trades go very well.

Stamp swaps can be great fun....there are opportunists out there like the Russian...but when you find a genuine trader ..trades can go on for years...i have mentioned this before but I have friends..from the internet that for 6 or 7 years..if they see something in my line of collecting they just send it to me and then I find something in their area to send back..its very informal !
