Fincbob2451, I think from memory the Numbers represent a particular Post Office. Each had their own number.

Fincbob2451, on the first cover, the obliterator cancel "162" signifies that it was cancelled in Cardiff. There are books that identify which numbers were assigned to what towns/cities in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

mchpp, Thanks for that information. I have often wondered if people collect postal markings like that. Do you know what the numbers on the postage itself mean? From left to right they look like 22-2-60 at the bottom of the postage.
