i just type what comes into my head so bear with me please...i am just a working class slug that had to provide a weekly paycheck to support my family..stamps were always a big interest but the budget to feed the hobby was not there until probably my 50's when the household dropped from 5 to 2...Big Difference ! Around 1999 I started playing with the internet..looking for a stamp forum..i knew they had to exist somewhere...found some really sad ones ! I also started buying and then yes I tried selling on the internet..it was a bit exciting like hunting or fishing...but not as much fun as collecting ! Then came huge break through...by chatting with other collectors I came to meet some in person..at my home or theirs..long story short..i came to meet people from economic and professional levels that I would not normally have socialized with....Philately is truly a hobby that leads to interesting paths if you let it !

I would add Phil, that it's one of the things I love about coming here to SCF.

There are no local clubs in my area, but even if there were and I attended all of them, I would still have never made friends with people from Australia, Canada, Israel, etc.

Kirk, thats true..and if ANY of them came to the States I would send them a map to my place..tour the Hudson Valley... Woodstock, the river estates of the Livingstons, Vanderbilts, Roosevelts etc and all their kin...boy they were smart to buy the riverfront property !

philb, love to hear your thoughts. I agree that this hobby is the perfect vehicle to entertain and relax someone. Whether it is at the local stamp club or on this forum, I have an opportunity to communicate with people I would not otherwise meet and enrich my retirement years.

Nice thoughts Phil for this May 11th.

I too can thank the Internet for helping me get closer to the hobby and meet other collectors...both in the flesh and on my puter screen.

Why, I met Golovacz through Stampoffers years ago, and we've been sharing weekly beers ever since ! I hope he comes to post again soon now his guests have gone.

And as for Stampstudy.....well.......

philb,

Sounds like you're pretty familiar with the area. A friend in that area really got me interested in stamp collecting in the early 80's which was encouraged by my wife and I haven't stopped since.

Philb,

My family is slowly moving down to 2 as well. I respect the knowledge offered not because there isn't a stamp club near by (their is) but if I have a question I can research past questions 24/7 for an answer. Not that in doing so brings up more things that I haven't yet thought about.

Sometimes I just have to avert my eyes before its too late and want to change things around.
