I was wondering if anybody could tell me what a block of 9 of the #505 error should cost. The error is the center stamp, og, mnh. Thanks for your input.

Welcome to Stamp Community Forum, Andrew823!

I don't have the most current catalog, so I can only give you a ballpark estimate of ~$1000 for the catalog value.

However, keep in mind that...

-- grade/condition is EVERYTHING for the price to attain that value
-- the price for this stamp has actually been dropping the past few years (>10% in past 3 years), so the buyer should be in the driver's seat (my opinion); shop around the various internet sites/auctions.

If it's the Carmine / Red Washington with the 5cent in the middle of a 2 cent block, those go for Hundreds.

In case anyone was wondering, this is what the 505 error in a block of 9 looks like (it also exists as a vertical pair in a block of 12).

That is the one I was looking at (the one above) I think the guy wants too much for it.

Blocks of 12 start at around $700 and go up according to condition. The Blocks of 9 can be found for a few Hundred & up

Are those actual 5's or upside down inverted 2's that would make more sense.

On ebay, some nice blocks have gone un-sold recently in the 450-600$ range. Search completed auctions for '505'.

Those are actual 5's. The wrong die was used for those positions.

I agree, I would not consider paying more than 50% of catalog value unless it was an exceptional example and with a certificate. As I stated, the catalog/retail value of the block has been dropping the past few years.

I would suggest patience and hunt for a great deal, not just a good deal. (my opinion)

Strip of 3 is nice, but not a standard format, and the #505 has a crease. To me, the crease is a deal killer considering the current bidding level.
