Hello, I have this censored Feldpost letter sheet. It has R.A.D.Mail written. This is crossed out and K.H.D. is writtenin. Does anyone know what RAD or KHD mail is. Thank you David

RAD was the Reichsarbeitsdienst, or Reich Labor Service Corps. KHD Maid was the Kriegs Hilfs Dienst Maid, or Maids' Auxiliary War Services. |

David,
If you don't want me to spoil your research, don't read any further. But... . . . . . . .
...let me see if I can get you started.
The letter was sent from an Oberleutnant Bortz. I can't be certain about the unit -- L.S.K?. 2/866. There was a Regional Rifle Battalion 866 (Landesschützen-Bataillon or LSB) in Vienna in 1945, so if the third letter's a "K", L.S.K. 2/866 could be a way of denoting the second company of the battalion (Landesschützen-Kompagnie 2/866)?!? The last word of the sender's address might be helpful, but I can't decipher it. Or the wording of the Feldpost cancel, though I think I can make out the "866".
It was addressed to Edith Lehmann with the KHD Maid. The address appears to be Stecken ... Iglaü, Protekt. Mähren (Štoky ... Jihlava, Protectorate of Moravia). Štoky (Stecken in German) is a town near Jihlava (Iglaü in German), in what was Czechoslovakia, then the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, now the Czech Republic. The postmark confirms that the letter arrive in Stecken, but the address was incorrect.
RAD units were designated by number. They were organized under larger work districts, designated by roman numerals. The RAD Unit in the original address -- 6/241 -- was stationed at Treise, in the Moselle work district (XXIV), covering the Moselle region of western Germany. So, the letter was addressed to a RAD Unit in western Germany, but the city and territory given in the address were in Moravia. In the forwarding address, you can see that the postal clerk has written "XXIV", designating the correct work district for the letter to be forwarded to. I can't make out the rest of the forwarding info.
And Feldpost isn't my area of expertise, but I think the second cancel might be from the Vienna Feldpost collection point (Wien Päckchensammelstelle), which catalogs in Michel for about 150 Euro. If that's a small "s" at the bottom (under the "D" in KHD), it almost certainly is.
Hope this helps. |

Don't forget that stamps were issued honouring the RAD in 1944 (Michel #895-95). |

PostmasterGS, Absolutely fantastic information. Much more than I could have hoped to find. I rescanned the cover and magnified it to see if I could make anything else out.I think it is a K in the LSK. Looking at thr K in Stecken both are very similar. I think LSK was just written faster. The original address is Stecken as you thought.I could on make out a little oin the forwarding address. The first part is Zwittau and the onde under it looks like Jivno.I can't make out the rest. The censor stamp does contain 866. I think it reads Landes schutzen 866.The last part of the senders address is equaly as hard. I can make out Alb______ / Ra____? I also noticed that it read RAD Maid not Mail. The amount of information you got is fantastic and I certainly appreciate all the effot you put into it. The stamps are great also.I will keep working to decifer the handwriting and again I can't thank you enough. By the way, the s is a small s. I measuret it at 2mm and the other letters in the cancel were 3nn. David |

Zwittaü and Jivno are both in Czechoslovakia. It's possible that's where the 6/241 was relocated when the Allies overran the Moselle region. |
