Hi to all
Any ideas of what caused these varieties.

The white stripes are not part of any post mark, and in the military stamp you can also see that part of REPU of Republic are affected as well.
I have examined them with a microscope and it looks like some time of white guide lines in ink on the stamps. The Military stamp has it running through the soldiers trouser leg as well.

It is all very puzzling.

Regards,

Horamakhet

To me they appear a lot like barcodes that several countries use as part of their automated postal handling. A type of cancellation so to speak...

Different countries use different colors / methods to read them. I think most of the colored ones (red, orange, green barcodes) as well as white/gray/invisible ones should glow if placed under UV-light. The black ones are read optically I think.

So I'd suggest placing the stamp under UV-light. If the lines glow, then you've found an answer.

Hi scb

I remembered that I have a jewellers loupe that has a uv and led light in it. Under the UV light the stripes glowed yellow, so I think you are correct.
