Note to new collectors:
Forgeries are usually made of expensive stamps, that is, stamps that cost us a lot if we want to collect them. Thus the allure of the profit to be gained by the forger.
It is illegal in most countries to own or sell forgeries of modern stamps (or older) made for the purpose to defraud the postal offices and governments of those countries.
And we collectors do try to stop the sale of modern forgeries made to either defraud postal authorities or us poor collectors. No one likes dishonesty, especially when it happens to you. Always try to acquire the genuine article, not a fake one. This goes for cancellations too.
Unfortunately this forging still happens today, made possible by modern printing and stamping technology.
Some people do collect oddities such as these and the prices realized for stamps by some famous (or infamous) forgers of yore are similar to those of the old genuine stamps.
