Something curious is happening here. It is a very late usage for this Official Stamp - 1940 - which puts it 30 or so years after its issue. What intrigues me is the postmark.

First, take a look at the stamp.

Now, I can make out the left hand portion of a rectangular box with a large 2 near the frame. At the top are the letters OLD AUS with the date 21(?) JNE(?) / 1940 on two lines below this in the centre of the box. There is, I believe, something above the date, but I can make out nothing except a faint A below the S of the OS overprint. At the bottom, and this is hardest to decipher, is the word Posted and below that are the letters P(?)ILLAP PIL(?)

Any ideas? Comments? Suggestions?

The State stamps continued to be valid until the changeover to decimal currency in 1966, though I have no idea if the OS overprints were ever acceptable for non-government use.

The postmark looks to me like: Top line 'BRISBANE' Second line 'QLD AUS(TRALIA), and the bottom two lines 'POSTED IN PILLAR BOX'. This just indicates that the letter was posted in a street pillar box. Quite a common postmark.

Sure helps when you are familiar with the material. I had not clued in to the "OLD" being "QLD" and was not expecting a city name above. Nor had I ever heard of Posted in a Pillar Box. I was trying to get Posted in (a Place Name). Thanks for sorting me out.

As an aside, I had kind of expected that the states' postage would have continued as valid. I believe that Newfoundland Postage is still valid for use in Canada and occasionally still receive philatelic mail with the odd NFLD low denomination tacked on to make up the current rate more than 60 years after the fact. Not officials though - they were never OK on regular mail.
