As a kid I collected stamps and inherited some stamps from my family. I have nothing of any real value I am sure.

Now I have moved on to topical collecting of. "Any philatelic material that depicts a motorcycle, or part thereof, or name of manufacturer, recognizable as being of ITALIAN ORIGIN."

So now I have albums of my childhood stamps, mostly hinged.
What should I do with them? ebay is not an easy option as I am in New Zealand.... what I thought was to maybe put together topicals and sell them to collectors on here at low prices all just to get them out and about again.

But do people even want stamps with hinge marks?

Note; I know I am not allowed to sell items yet as I have not got to 50 posts or been on here long enough so this is just a question of what to do and not a for sale ad.

Regards
Gavin

Keep it - you will not regret it. Here are a couple of pages from my childhood collection, last worked on in the early 70's. Nothing of much value, but it brings back fond memories.

I agree. Just keep them until your at least 50.
Many of us have the fondest memories of your first album.
I went out and bought a used Harris Freedom album, the one I replaced
when I was 11 with a Liberty album. Still working on filling it
a second time.

(oops, sorry, hit enter twice. Not trying to get to 50 faster, honest.)

Hinges are still used for mounting stamps today, and for most people, that's just fine. I agree with BeeSee.

I would keep them if they really ment anything to me now. I don't have kids and don't intend to so their is no one to pass them onto.

I am sure I could make a lot of topical collectors happy!
regards

I was in the same position last year when I returned to collecting. Had 8 binders filled, more or less, with what is now referred to as 'world stamps'.....ie. everything. I took out what I wanted, the US and Canadian collections and took the rest to a dealer, and sold it. Mistake.
Only because he gave me very little for it in trade. I've since started buying and selling on ebay, and here on SCF (trading here as well, which is more fun) and that is just to feed my collection.
I guess the moral of my story is, if you have no sentimental attachment (and believe me, I can get attached to stuff!), use it to fund the rest of your new collection, whether it's through trade or sale. Think of it as the next logical step. Your collection is just growing again.

I agree with the rest Gavin,
there is no relationship between the effort expired,
the heritage, and the history of your little album
to that which you will get when you sell.
Bite your lip, put brain in neutral and store it at the back
of the loungeroom china cabinet.
I have a guess you will be thankful one day.

rod222, It's a box, 1 foot by 1 foot by a foot and a half! 5 albums, boxes and plastic bags full of crap.. errr stamps!

I think I will get rid of most of them, really they are not that meaningful to me.
Now my current collection I will never get rid of!

Regards
Gavin

Gavin hello. Reading your post I see you want to do something useful with the inherited/childhood collection. Since you're a New Zealander, 'donate' the little collection to a child that was directly effected by the recent Christchurch earthquake.

Your descission from ALL the posted 'good advice'. Keep us informed.
