i received a small packet from T360 today..what a nice gesture..a 1942 censored cover from Guatemala to Panama..T said I could pass it on if I wished..i will keep it..if you check ebay Guatemala stamps most covers are mailed to the USA or Germany...less popular locations are worth more..again thanks..it was a thoughtful gesture much appreciated..phil

I have been trying to figure out what a censored cover is. Could you please shed some light on that for me?

CW I will try..see the numbered tape on the left side of the envelope ? the envelope was slit open and the contents read..the military censored their own mail..probably a government or postal employee censored civilian mail..the tape shows that a censor approved the letter for mailing..that it posed no threat to national security or gave secrets to the enemy...its a war time thing !!

Here's an article on postal censorship that will give you a good idea: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postal_censorship

One of the larger airmails is cancelled with a recurring cancel..land of perpetual spring in several different languages..another popular cancel is the worlds finest coffee or something to that effect...the Guatemala society magazine El Quetzal has many articles on the Germans who were invited to come and farm coffee in the 19th century..hence much early airmail covers to Germany !!

Thanks Phil and Greg. That's what I thought a censored cover was but wnated to make sure before I opened my mouth to someone else and made a fool of myself. Now another question. Does that make it anymore valuable or does it depend on the collector?

Tom, in the future, all censored covers
should be mailed first to Buchanan NY,
so that the contents may be examined by
censor # GGGG

CW, you will find that censored covers of the 1939-1945 era are quite common and available..you can find many in the dollar box..depends on where it was censored..its a collecting topic, some people collect only censored covers..we are free..we can collect whatever we like !!
