now that I have identified it,
a simple search (text string-"commercial")
on SCF would have you here
https://goscf.com/t/13136

Illustrating how important a good thread title is.

You should consider changing your thread title to:

GB : Commercial Opt : Harrods

for future students of GB opts.

There is a great page on the Harrods Overprint at

http://www.cosgb.org/cosgbv2n11.htm

Key Points :

  • Second largest non-governmental usage of commercial overprints after prudential
  • Usage began around 1920
  • 6 Varieties including horizontal and vertical formats

Ooooh! nice one Drew

Well done Gerry
Now, when anyone on the planet who Googles for
"commercial opt" your post hopefully will show up,
and more people will be drawn to SCF.

Good, intelligent thread topics help everyone.

Staff Edit - I guess you couldn't be bothered to even read the rules that you agreed to when you registered since you managed to break several with your very first post?

Gentlemen

Seems that as a newby I broke a few rules last night, so I'm trying again, please accept my apologies.

I'm a British commercial overprint collector, I'm interested in sharing infomation about this interesting corner of British Stamp collecting ( or at least I think it is) There isn't much information avaiable I'm afraid although I do have a few friends around the world who share this interest, Bujutsu has mentioned 1 interesting site above and there is a further link to a newer regularly updated online Blog at that site.

I am constantly amazed how many commercial overprint varities there are from gas companies, to insurance banks brewers newspapers you name it. My interest is in finding out about the original company what they did and if they still exist, only recently I contacted a british company who I had found 2 QV overprints from who were still in buisness supplying mica to the electrical trade. I had quite a e-mail conversation with the owner.

Paul

Have you been collecting commercial overprints for long ?

I found this British commercial overprint in an old collection I was sorting this evening. It seems that Paul Walser & Co were in the business of hats and millinery.
