Nice cut square, but I wouldn't venture to guess it's Scott #. I'll be interested to see if anyone else chimes in with an answer, though.

I just looked this up in my Scott Specialized Catalog and it's in there somewhere between U227 and U249 issued in October 1883. The problem is there are no less than 6 different dies and 3-5 different paper types within each of those die varieties. It would take a sharp eye and a strong magnifying glass to sort out the subtle differences.

Not 227-230 (no wavy lines)
Not 236-239 wavy lines thick and blurred
Not 240-242 3.5 links over left oval above "2"

as I see it

paper thiskness should dictate postcard or newspaper wrapper

Definitely not a postcard. Paper is thin.

Scott U231 if white paper, U234 if fawn paper. The scan suggests fawn, but that can always be an attribute of the scanner.

It looks more like Amber than fawn in real life. Paper is definitely dark, but still might be fawn.

Hard to tell from the scan, but I'm possibly thinking U244, paper compared to my known colors is more possibly U246. There is as perceived shortened crossing under the right 2
