I recently bought a massive, but really bad, lot of low denominiation Australian defins and commems from the '30s to '50s. It's basically a load of rubbish, with at least 40% of the stamps damaged, but some stamps from the Depression era have quite decent cancels. This is the best that can be said for the lot. I'm sure many users of this forum are aware of the dangers of buying kiloware from a bad source and aware that it's not unusual for something like this to happen. I'd really like to find a way to salvage something from the disaster by listing the better cancels for sale on ebay. My problem is that I have no idea whether anyone collects cancels from that era, so no idea which ones to list. So my question: is there a standard reference work that lists cancels for this era (mid-20th century) and rates them in terms of their scarcity? In one case, there's a stamp from a town that had a population of only about 300 at that time. I would presume cancels from this town are relatively hard to find, but I have no way of knowing. How can I find out? Or is there very little interest in cancels from this era to speak of?

The Western Australian compendium alone comprises 6 volumes?
And would cost $480???
One would have to sell a great many stamps to recoup the cost of that.
Most of my postmarks are rural NSW, so perhaps I should find out if my local library can get hold of a relevant book for me.
Anyone know what's the best book on NSW postmarks from the '30s and '40s? |

Thanks for the info, rod222. I guess if you're interested in just one state, it would not be money ill spent. I noticed last night while reviewing 'Completed Listings' on ebay that a Queensland cancel (1927, I think) sold recently for $170, so collector interest in such items definitely seems to exist. |

If you have plenty of rural NSW cancels, I am always looking for: Gulgong Mudgee Home Rule Coolah Cassilis Re the closed ebay listings, beware, as many cancels that look alike are different. The tip about the Premier Postal resource is a good one |

Talk about postmarks, I bought this envelope today in stamp shop of all places. He had never checked the contents. I saw WA 1d red unchecked but never thought about it. When I got home I looked in the envelope and there were 22 WA stamps with all different postmarks. so far I have identified the following four in the photo Ravensthorpe?, Busselton, Donnybrook, and Nedland? Some of the others are common, Fremantle, Perth, Others only have part postmarks, ---ellerberr--, a something Brook, --arrog, nie---- e something taning, e something town, Who ever owned them originally was probably collecting them for the postmarks. Regards, Horamakhet |

jubilee, have you been looking for Mudgee for a while? I'm open to sale or swap - send me a message to set the wheels in motion.
BTW, can you pls explain what '6PY' means on the Mudgee datestamp?
I'm sorry but I don't seem to have Gulgong after all. I was thinking of something else. Sorry! |

Horamakhet, thanks for the info about the Manning book.
A nice little find there re the WA stamps!
I was in Busselton not so long ago. Walked down the jetty a few days before they closed it for repairs. A lovely spot. |

Hi Jimjamtwo
Apparently they are not cheap, I believe that they are $150.00 each. I believe a dealer called Glen Stephens is offering the two at $280.00 Or they are available from the author but I do not have an address for him.
Regards Horamakhet
