Is it my imagination or has google improved their google images search function when it comes to searching stamp topics?

You're correct -- they've been working on that area.

And check out the AMAZING feature that lets you find information by dragging YOUR picture onto their search page...

Kirk: thanks for the google link re images. I dragged an image into the box and it worked quite well. I'm glad to see that they are finally working on this.

Just WOW. I tried it with several stamp images and the results are great. You get a lot of hits and pointers to similar.

We have finally moved to the era where written language is no longer necessary.

That must be some very "intelligent" software to recognise images. Does this ring warning bells for the type of security features where you have to type in a picture of some wobbly letters and numbers? Are we close to a point where software could "recognise" the letters/numbers from these images and bypass the security?

Here is this thread that is over a year old and I have never noticed the little camera in Google Images and accidentally clicked on it and I thought to myself, "oh please work"

Here is a stamp, no country or not even the name of this person I dragged and dropped and whah lah, another image appeared so I am more than thrilled, I found that it is Venezuela, 1893 and confirmed it in my Scott Catalog! Here it is:

Regarding image recognition, see www.tineye.com which will search for the original source of an image on the Internet. At the moment, they only have 2.5 billion images coded, but that number increases daily.

It works very well for researching picture postcards, not so well for stamps (yet). You can also add the function to a toolbar.

Both google and the tineye are great utilities to help ID stamps. Thanks again for helpful stuff.
