A few years back here in Elgin IL there was an unveiling ceremony. What is the purpose of these USPS officially sponsored unveilings other than to give local government people a platform to talk. Noticed that here it was in conjunction with the city's Fiesta Salsa celebration. Nice to look at but on a collector scale pretty lame.

IMHO, as you say, for publicity, for local/historical interest, and sometimes for friends/family of honored subjects.

I attended the unveiling ceremony for the Abe Lincoln bicentennial stamps in Springfield and received a nice postcard depicting all 4 stamps, which I had postmarked of course.

I just did a search for unveiling's in Elgin IL. I only remembered one but over the years there has been a few. I guess you are right that they give out a special cancel for the event. But from all the hype about it it seems more like a way for the local post office to interact with the community. Elgin's usually has a lot of good press. From helping a boy that was dieing from a rare disease, collecting food, or to these unveiling's every couple of years. I work with one of the ex-postmasters at present and I can see from his attitude why there is a lot of community feeling at least at this office. I just hope it continues.
