Everyone will have their preference of their own mount brands. Showgard seems to be the most popular. The Scott/Prinz and Haywid also have their following. I don't put that many mounts in an album so I have not yet gotten to the point where consistent appearance is all that important, so I typically buy what's on sale.
For example, today I bought some Scott/Prinz mounts at a $1 less than a package of the same Showgard product. I believe they will equally protect the stamp ... and I do like the split backs. Of course, others may have different opinions, but that's what stamp collecting is all about. No right or wrong answers. Just do it your way. You have no one to please or answer to but yourself.
I tend to also buy what's on sale. I just bought a bunch of Mystic mounts. They looked more expensive initially, but Mystic's shipping charge was far less than anyone else's. Mystic's stamps ended up costing 0.3 CENTS more per mount. Since I just ordered their Heirloom album, I wanted to make sure the mounts arrived at the same time as the album so I could get right to work.
I have used Split Back mounts and have never had a problem. People on another forums were complaining that somehow there is an issue with them and the Haywid top mounts are better. I have a huge pile of Showguards from years ago I am not about to throw out.
