Found this among a bunch of used stamp in my stockbook. Looks to be a poorly imprinted precancel. When scanning the stamp and magnifying the image against possible precancels, I think it may be ORANGEBURG, NY, in which case it would look to be a Type 281.

Anyone care to comment if I have this right or not?

wt1,

I believe you are correct. Type 281 for Orangeburg, NY.

It definitely is a difficult precancel to read...I ran a wild card search on my catalog CD for "Orange*" and Orangeburg was the only one to pop up for NY. The spacing on the bars seem to point to the 281 as well.

Thanks. I'm glad to have some confirmation that I was on the right track.

Talk about difficult to read precancels, here's one I gave up on long ago. I just have it marked as "illegible". Probably not worth anything anyway because of the poor precancel impression and torn perfs on the bottom of the stamp, but it can get frustrating when only a couple of letters are readable in a city name:

I am not sure what this one is, but I would vote NOT the 281.
Sometimes these identifications take some Zen.
