ID / Color Check: 63

These aren't the same color -- the one on the left is much brighter and stronger. The other could just be grubbier (had a harder life because it went thru the mail, perhaps). When I look at the prices in Scott, I doubt either is anything other than "blue".

Also, from a collecting / value point of view is the red PAID on the left a problem?

My 2003 Scotts shows different blues for this issue. #63 is listed as blue, 63a ultramarine, 63b dark blue. I have trouble telling the colours just by their names sometimes. I'm sure someone will have some sort of chart you could reference.
If you look in the Scott's Specialized catalogue, it lists extra prices for use stamps according to colour of the cancellation. Often a cancel in a colour other than black can be worth more. So...red good!

Yes, exactly. Actually, now I look again, the 2010 lists "pale blue" and "bright blue" under 63, along with plain ol' "blue". So maybe the Left is bright blue? And the Right is ... ?

I have an SG "Stamp Color Key" from the 1980s. Contains about 200 shades, but despite all that, the trouble is that it rarely has the actual shade you need!

If you want brown-carmine, it has carmine, deep carmine, carmine-brown, brownish-carmine, deep carmine-brown and deep brown-carmine.
If you want blue-green, it has pale green-blue, green-blue, bluish-green, deep bluish-green and dark greenish-blue.
If you want black, it has dark black, light black, intense black, semi-intense black, night black, umbrella black ...

And don't even get me started on olive and bistre!

Still, you get the picture! Occasionally it helps, but mostly it just frustrates.
