hello all

the reason for this post is about my 3 cent washingtons [A25]
there just seems like there are so many different colors for this stamp design.

i understand that the colors are very hard to see on the internet...but I would appreciate any help to see if I should investigate further on this types.
at first I thought they were all just scott numbers 65's but I am not sure.

i would appreciate any help as always
i would also try to find out about some of the cancels.

this first group are the most light in color.
in some light they look pink...but others not

this second group appears to have a more brown tone in the stamps

this third group seem to have more red colors

as always thanks for all your help

I don't see any pinks but the last 3 in the third group look like a nice rose red. There are also 4 nice cancels the bold US is nice as is the star in a circle on the last row. The last two stamps in the second row look like Norton double ring duplex cancels. The last stamp in the second row looks like an Apr 68 cancel which would be in the grill era. That is about the normal cutoff point between the usage of the rarer Z and D grill will the commom E (about Feb 10 first grill day)and F (about Mar 17 first grill day).

Russ

The first A25's are the #64 issues and were produced from Aug 1861 through the end of Jan 1862 and the colors associated with that time period are, the true pink, pigeon blood pink, and the rose pink. After that you shift to the #65 issues and there are somewhere around 40 different shades of the light rose, rose, rose red, deep rose red, brown rose, light brown rose, dull brown red, pale brown red, and not to forget the dark brown red. Starting in mid 1866 you will start seeing the grilled stamps and like Ross has mentioned the common ones appear after Feb. 1868. Also, from mid 1862 there was a lot of experimentation being done with the colors and the best known are the #66TC lake colors and one of the last colors produced was in the 1900, the scarlet red 74TC.
All the best
Ron

look close because as stated before people used to iron them out flat. Why this practice began I'll probably never know but might pay to investigate a little closer because you never know? Also people love the "Fancy cancels" and in some cases can fetch a higher price than the stamp itself so if they are all #65's then the cancels might be where the "treasure" lies. -Cheers ~Jay

Jay!
while I will agree with you that grills have been known to ironed out I think that is most prevalent in the grilled pictorials and not the A25's. The A25's suffer for the opposite problem of grills be forged. I have it on fairly good authority that one of the most common forgeries is the #74 A-grill (music box). I have been told (by BW) that a very high percentage of the so called music box grills are forged and should always have a cirt. The "B" grill I do not think we need worry about, seeing as there are only four known examples.

Speaking of A25's, you should have received a couple in the mail?

The various pink shades are notorious for fading under the correct conditions and I am assuming that you are not old enough for them to have been mailed to you! So not knowing how they may have been stored long ago, the colors tend to drift off.

I have to wonder if that second stamp from the right on the second row is cancelled from Lewisburg PA.? That is just a hop, skip and a jump from where I was born. (Jersey Shore PA.) Pretty cool. and the other one just above it looks to be Williamsport PA.? Wow I'd love to find something like that! Very very neat!

I just noticed that second one in from the right on bottom row look like a Jersey shore fancy star cancel. Cool! I actively look for these and document the if they pop-up (like here).

This is the one I'm talking about:

edit:

I know of 8 on cover (I own 3) and 9 (including yours above) as singles in-case you was interested. I'm positive that there are more but they'll pop-up and I'll add them to my list. :)
