2 Cent Washington, Trying To ID

Hi Gang,

I'm trying to figure out this 2 cent Washington. It's perf 11, I think (by the dimensions) a flat plate version. Near as I can tell, it's unwatermarked (using watermarking fluid in a black tray).

But, I'm having trouble telling if it's a Type I, II etc...

Any help greatly appreciated.

The unwatermarked perf 11 flat plate can only be either Type I (Scott 499) or Type Ia (Scott 500). The main distinguishing feature is the definition on the top of the toga rope and around the toga button. The Type Ia is rare and was only produced on plates 10208 and 10209. Your stamp is a Type I Scott 499.

Thanks Russ. That clears it up. This is probably the hardest series of stamps to sort out that I've encountered.
