This was one of the original stamps in my very first collection and I know that some came from my uncle that worked on Wall st. somewhere at a bank. I'm supposing that this came from there but, I was sort of curious as to this perfin? Can it be identified? Common? Thank you for any assistance you can offer. ~Jay

Not sure as to the ID, but I have a couple of NY Stock Transfer Stamps in different denominations with the same perfin (though not as well centered as yours), leading me to believe that it was a common perfin. Maybe someone else can help identify it for us.

A stab in the dark, Chase Manhattan & Company? Just guessing.

That does seem a reasonable conclusion, Chase Manhattan. Looks to read C M 3:co or maybe C M 3:00?
I was always curious as to what it was and what it meant. I know now that they was a cancellation but as to how it reads I'm still unsure. Thank you.

No ILS, what you are reading as a 3 is definitely an ampersand (&)

Also, as an afterthought; Here is the front of that Perforation Gauge. Someone on another post asked me about it and I thought since I was working with it ,I'd scan it for ya! Lighthouse brand.

The user is Carlisle, Mellick & Company. If this perfin were on a postage stamp - it would be rare - but on revenue stamps it is common. Many perfins used by brokerage houses were used primarily for revenues.

Awesome information! Thank you so much for breaking the code! Seriously though, I have always been curious as to what that meant.
