The USPS in all their wisdom finally issued today the last of the series of 15 designs to be used for the "Earthscapes" issue of 2012:

The issue is quite interesting visually, but, especially in the Urban series, I never thought that a highway interchange, skyscraper apartments or a residential subdivision would every qualify as subject matter for US postage stamps!

They are attractive. I must admit, though, every time I see the term Forever on a US postage stamp I get this mild pang of loss seeing that our stamps are no longer denominated. I suppose it will pass.

Nice designs!

I think that instead of putting "Forever" on a stamp, it should say "1st" as in "First class." Sure, it's what Britain does, but it makes more sense and frees up more room.

In Canada they used the P inside a Maple Leaf, nice touch IMO.

Norway has a similar problem as US, since they put Europa (for stamps that can be used whenever for mail to Europe) and Innland for mail within Norway.

They are interesting stamps nonetheless, although I don't collect US.

I'd settle for that -- or "F" for Forever, or P for Permanent.

For that matter, "M" for Mailman -- I don't care, I just wish it wasn't the whole word.

I wonder if they chose not to use "F" for forever because of the previously issued non denominated F stamp aka F alpha stamp? I know the USPS could use the Infinity symbol a sideways 8.

This is an excerpt from the NY Daily News about the next to the last stamp in this series, where they have identified the specific high-rise apartment building depicted on the stamp. I wonder how many of the other stamps can be identified that closely?

Quote:
The United States Postal Service has unveiled a new 2012 Forever stamp featuring an aerial shot of the West End Towers apartment building on West End Avenue and 63rd Street.

According to this article, they have now identified the Railroad Roundhouse stamp as having been an aerial photograph of Steamtown USA in Scranton, PA:

http://thetimes-tribune.com/news/ch...xzz1XGiPgLqY

I wonder how many others of these stamps (i.e. highway interchange, residential subdivision and/or barge fleeting) will be identified in time for the introduction of this stamp series?

I also find it interesting that the above article makes mention of this set of stamps being issued in October 2012. Where did they get that information? I find it interesting that the date of issue (or even the month of issue) wasn't included in the Beyond the Perf web site when the stamp was announced.

The "Cranberry Harvest" stamp of this series has just been identified as an aerial photo from Carver, Massachusetts, as per this Boston Globe news link on 09/12/2011:

Here's the latest list of identified locations for stamps included in the above 2012 issue:

Quote:
The agricultural earthscapes in the new stamp set include Smith's photo of the cherry orchard in Wisconsin, salt evaporation ponds near San Francisco, log rafts on their way to a sawmill in Idaho, center-pivot irrigation patterns on Kansas cropland, and a cranberry harvest in Massachusetts.

The natural earthscapes in the set include photos of a glacier and icebergs in Alaska, the Mount St. Helens volcanic crater, a geothermal spring in Yellowstone National Park, fog rolling in and around Stagecoach butte in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park in southeastern Utah and an inland marsh in Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge on Maryland's eastern shore.

The urban earthscapes depict a residential subdivision in Clark County, Nev.; a pair of towboats wrangling commercial barges near the Houston Ship Channel in Texas; a railroad roundhouse at the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Penn.; skyscraper apartments in Manhattan; and a highway interchange in Miami, Fla.

Data taken from this news article, suggests that the Cherry Orchards stamp is an aerial photograph from Door County, Wisconsin:

All that extra info is great. It would make for a great display for someone, showing other pictures of the areas or the topic.

I think it makes a difference knowing where the picture is from. Personalizes it in a way sometimes.

Same kind of thing as knowing when and where a stamp was used by reading the cancellation. Tells a story, draws you in, engages you.

Nice stamps by the way. I recall the great Britain sets in a similar fashion also. They were nice too.

Yes. A sheet of 15 different designs. Similar in format to the 2011 "Go Green" stamps (I think).

Wouldn't that be cool if you lived in one of the houses used for the residential subdivision stamp
