Hi Everyone, I have come across a few of these stamps and I find them very interesting because I noticed that I have some with the little airplane overprint, and others without it. I really don't have a question, but thought it was interesting, so I wanted to get your opinions and information on this stamp. I take that back, lolol.. I do have a question... Was it common to put a overprint like this, on stamps? The airplane just looks sort of out of place, or like a drawing on the stamp. I like it though! You can see I have one that is purple with out plane and orange with plane, I have another orange one without the plane, but I can't find it. Shame on me! LOL Thank you, SueStamps Another question, since the stamp is already an airmail stamp, what would be the reason why they would add (at a later date I am guessing) to add the airplane later if it is already an airmail stamp? Thank you!

Unificado means unified. In 1940, Colombia's two air carriers united to form a single airline company. The two airlines were SCADTA (Sociedad Colombo-Alemana de Transporte Aéreo ) and SACO (Servicio Aéreo Colombiano) and were united to form the company called Avianca. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avianca |

I could easily see collecting a page or two of stamps with those cute little airplanes - unfortunately those overprints are often C1, C2 etc and a little pricey. Love old airmails like that. I need to find that Columbia stamp Sue. |

Indeed, the unificado overprint info was new to me, nowhere to be found in Stanley Gibbons spec 1969 So thanks Smauggie.

Thanks to your post Sue I went back and looked through my Columbia air mails waiting to be filed and I found one of the "unificado" overprints! That made my day. Love this forum! |

OK - I found another one and did a little more research. These are Scott #322-346 (1959-60), described as "Regular and Air Post Issues of 1948-59 Overprinted in Black or Red". They are footnoted in Scott as "Issued following agreement between the Colombian government and AVIANCA to unify the air postage on all mail carried by AVIANCA." Now I will be more on the lookout to get a full set. Scott 340 below: |

Hi Quote: scouter said: I could easily see collecting a page or two of stamps with those cute little airplanes - unfortunately those overprints are often C1, C2 etc and a little pricey. Love old airmails like that. I need to find that Columbia stamp Sue. To augment what smauggie said. This set is Scott C322-C346, SG 968-988, Mi 862-882. There are 21 stamps in the set and a set is valued at Scott 2012 Mint $33USD and Used at $8.50USD. There Are some values with inverted and doubled overprints. P.S. scouter the country name is Col ombia not Col umbia. Jerry B |

I had to find out why I always type the word "Columbia" with the letter you instead of the letter O
Doing a little research online, I found this:
The city of Columbia in South Carolina, the District of Columbia, and the Columbia River in the United States are all spelled with a but the nation of Colombia is correctly spelled with an "o".
I did not realize this... So, SCF not only teaches me about stamps, but how to spell correctly too! LOLOL...
Speaking of spelling, I see some words that instead of the letter Z, they use the letter S
realise, realize, utilize, utilise etc? Thank you! SueStamps

Colombia vs Columbia....
I was doing a stamp blog on Colombia a few months ago, and even though I KNEW the correct spelling, I had to go back and change half of the Colombias... :) |

Hey, I found another stamp just like the one I posted on the very first thread of this subject, except the airplane has MOVED LOL So that leads me to believe that this is rubber stamped? I just figured that they ran a bunch of stamp sheets through a printing press after the stamps were already printed and just printed the airplane overprint on them. Right? Actually I wanted to start a new topic and ask everyone to upload photos of any stamps they have, with a volcano on it. I love volcano stamps and wanted to see what else is out there. Here is the stamp photo, to compare it with the first one I uploaded: |
