Thanks everyone for your help!

Maybe the next one will be the winner!

Like I said, I learned more this afternoon, in a short period,
all due to this stamp. Without it, I wouldn't be as informed.

Learning experience.

The 482A is extremely rare, ther sre 42 "certified" copies (37 used off cover singles, 3 single on cover and 1 off cover pair). This is one issue where the expertization/certification process has been a disaster with about 25-35% of the certs being issued to fraudulently altered Scott 500.

Tom, the chart shows 1 distinguished from 1a only on items 3 and 4. 6,7,8 distinguishes 1/1a from 2 and/or 3.

Open the chart again and click on the numbers to get the detailed descriptions. On #6 for example, the horizontal lines to the immediate left of the sideburn are not joined on a Type I. They are lightly joined on a Type Ia.

What was throwing me was the boldness of this Type 1...
All the pics, and my own MNH Type 1 all had MUCH lighter details in key places.

HOWEVER, the 1847 site had a note that went something like this:
Shown are examples of TYPICAL Type 1 details.
There are Type 1 stamps with much better detail.

My rope outline and button details are much more bold,
HOWEVER, they are still broken in places, like a dashed line,
as opposed to solid. That was the rub that kept my hopes up
until I finally was able to check the watermark.

Anyone need a bolder than average used 409 with Schermack perfs?

I'm chiming in on this post. You've peaked my curiousity so I've pulled out my Schermack type III stamps. I posted these some time ago. Can you see any value here?

Dale,

You've got quite a nice Schermack Type III collection! I think I only have 3 or 4 and this one on cover is my favorite.

Steve
