I've bought alot of plate blocks and sheets from USPS this year (almost all of them) and I have them in a seperate album(stockbook).
my question iz this, should I keep all them in the plastic they came in or take them out and put them in my albums under mounts? does it hurt there value removing them from the celephane? your thoughts....
For long-term storage (6+ months), they should be taken out of any plastic wrapping (other than inert plastic mounts or containers specifically made for stamps). I think it is quite safe to say that the wrapping they came in is not of the stamp-safe kind.
The adhesives used on modern stamps don't allow for proper mounting in albums or stockbooks. Additionally, the slightest "flexing" of a sheet can cause stamps to separate from the backing. I am of the opinion that modern sheets should be left in their plastic covers in order to protect the from dust, etc that could infiltrate even the smallest areas of exposed gum (If, for instance, a corner of a sheet starts to separate from the backing). I'm probably being over-cautious, but it's my nature :)
Make sure if you are not using stamp mounts that the stamps you value are in a non-acetic archival quality cover that will not ruin them. Your original packaging as Rileysan stated will NOT do.
I use Harco "Mint Sheet Files". They lie nice and flat, or straight up if properly supported. I have only been able to find them used (which suits me just fine at $1-2 a pop).
