I bit the bullet on a 10a that is supposed to have been plated by Dr. Chase as position 38R2E. I don't recall ever buying from this dealer before, Stuart Katz located in Hampton, NH but if its the real deal then I will get to know him better. Opinions are always welcomed about the stamp or the dealer. The scan below is from the WEB and not the actual stamp, which I'll post again once I get it.

I have a couple of Katz pieces awaiting expertization. He seems reliable -- if mine are fakes or faulty, they are darned good ones.

PS I don't know a 10a from a hole in the ground, but if you get bored of looking at this beauty, I'll happily take it off your hands for a while. Love it.

stampvirgin,

I got it from ebay and I'm really looking forward to seeing it in my hands. I also managed to win on a couple of 10a's on cover. I tried for 3 covers but lost out on the one to former Governor Cobb of Georgia. That would have been real nice. I bid it up to $76.00 on that one but lost out at the last second, I was sniper-ed! The other 2 are great covers on their own and I'm pleased to get them. Please bare in mind that all these images are copied from ebay and are not my scans.

Finally, I just won a pair of 10a or 11a, I'm not sure yet.

A view up of just the pair.

I want to thank my favorite 1851/1857 specialist, expert, guru Mr. Sinclair for pointing me in right direction.

The pair are 11A's 52-53L2L. The top label and upper right diamond block are joined on 52L2L like yours. 52L2L also has one line recut in the upper left triangle, just like yours. Position 52L2L is the only 11A position that has that combination of recuts, so the identification and position of your stamps is certain. The color and impression means they cannot be 52-53L2E, which are similarly recut.

Winston-- did you win that '75 Quarterman reprint, and maybe have an extra 1929 edition to sell me?

Art-- I saw those that Stuart Katz had for sale also-- really nice stamps. Curious-- his descriptions look just like William Langs, and William Langs is from Hampton, NH also. Coincidence?

I finally got the 10a single in the mail, that's nearly two weeks since the auction! I think that's way too long and will so indicate on my feedback. Two days ago I sent Stuart Katz an email asking about the stamp and a tracking number. I guess I was a bit early in sending it. He did sign it Stu so I guess I didn't over react. I sent the single and both covers to Bill Weiss for certificates.

I don't know if he has business dealing with Lang or not. To be honest, if Bill gives the stamp a positive 10a certificate, I don't care.

Funny thing, he doesn't list Bill as an accepted expertizer of U.S. stamps even though Bill is accepted by most major auction houses in the country.

If my 10a does come back with a negative cert I'll see what Mr. Katz thinks about Bill Weiss's certs.

Partners with William Langs that a few have had not so good experiences.
Have not heard much reference on Stu Katz other than a large seller for ebay. I would be very interested as to what the certificates come back as. Langs guarantee was changed after my dealing with him. Just do a search here or over at VSC and you will find more.

I like the one with the Boston to Lewiston address.
It's nice.

Lang's doesn't accept Bill's certs. because lang has cheated a lot of people, bill has called him out on it, so lang doesn't like bill and won't accept his certs. Lang is pretty much a jerk.

I just got my covers back from Bill Weiss and I'm happy to say they both came back positive ID'd 10a. I had little doubt, considering the source of the covers.

Even happier, the single came back as a positive ID'd 10a VF-XF. I now need to continue my search for a valid Scott U.S. 10 to finish this quest.

FYI, I also found out that Stuart Katz sells for William Langs so I guess its a good thing I did get it certified. All in all, it was a smooth transaction, it turned out well and I'm a happy camper.
