A stamp was issued once because of 9/11. It was the US 1st semi-postal, but that was more intended for the firefighters & police who were victums of the tragity.

I bought and used this stamp exclusively for the period it was available. I was VERY disappointed that it was withdrawn, yet the breast cancer semipostal has been available for 13 years. Not right.

Personally, I'd like to see the Heroes semipostal reissued as a forever semipostal with permanent availability.

If I recall correctly, there was a small news item at one point relating to the use of the "semi-postal" portion of proceeds realized from the sale of the Heroes stamp that made for an accounting nightmare and the USPS didn't want to extend it any further. I'll look and if I can find the article, I'll be sure to post it here.

This wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but it basically sums up the issue:

If you're inclined to read the whole story, the entire GAO Report is available at this link (the above quote was taken from page 15):

It's the same reason we didn't get stamps for Pearl Harbor or the Oklahoma City Bombing. Ok, we got Pearl Harbor finally on the WII Souvenir Sheets issued in the 90s, but that was more a point in history than it was a memorial for the act.

The stamp we got in 2001 celebrated the heroes, it did not mourn the tragedy. And it was semi-postal.

I for one wish I could forget! The fear of not knowing if Friends and Family were alive or dead. Watching the seemingly endless smoke, the smell that permeated the air for miles (and knowing what it was) and for week's on end. The lonely morbid feeling driving down the hwy. during "rush hour" and being 1 of a half dozen cars for 40 miles. Then the funerals. Yes, their is a part of me that wishes I could forget! But, that would be an insult to those who died and those who came to the aid of Our Nation's (over 100 nations lost nationals that day).

Now back on topic. They could have released one with a theme of International Unity or the like. Or what about the massive flag on the flagpole atop the towers. I think we all would have understood the meaning! There were and still are options!
