I was trawling through my KGV single watermark 1d reds late last night when I suddenly realised that two of them were distinctly pink. This one was cancelled at Gleniffer, NSW, in April 1918:

Does anyone happen to know the catalogue number/CV for this pink shade?

The 1918 1d pinks are, I think, reasonably well-known, but I'm very confused by this one, which was cancelled on 4 January, 1915. It doesn't seem to fit into any known category of KGV shades, especially the early ones, and could best be described as fluro pink:

What do people think it is?

Colour matching is very difficult due to differences in scanners, cameras and monitors etc.
Having said that your images look so red to me as to not be close to pink.
Perhaps you could provide scans of other shades for comparison.
I think Rod has posted a nice colour chart for KGVs in the past which may also help.

Thanks for dropping by, Anthony!

I've checked the KGV colour charts - there are a number available on the internet - but while there are several different shades of pink known for early 1918, there is nothing that resembles the appearance of the stamp with the 1915 cancel until 1918.

The colours of the scans are accurate, at least the way they look on my monitor. The first one I'd describe as rose pink, but words fail me when it comes to describing the second.

I assumed that most people knew what the 1d reds looked like, so I didn't think of posting a scan for comparison's sake. However, it could be a good idea, so I'll try to get around to it this evening.

The first pink shade was Reddish Pink G15 but didn't appear till March 1915.

Previous shades were
Carmine Red G10 Aug 1914
Bright Red G11 Oct 1914
Salmon Red G12 Nov 1914
Deep Red G13 Nov 1914
Dull Red G16 Feb 1915

Well, Al, I think it would be impossible to identify this stamp as one of those five previous shades.

finches, I haven't actually reached the UV stage yet. (What sort of UV globe do I need to buy? Where can I get one?)

I'm not sure what it would tell me, though. Are you suggesting that it would allow the stamp to be identified?

I should also add that colour matching used stamps is also more difficult as you have other factors such as sun/chemical bleaching and soaking issues to contend with.

Interesting topic though.

In that case, Al, it's going to be a colour changeling.

Unfortunately.

Australia KGV Penny Red shades.
All up it has taken 5 years of work on penny red shades to get not very far at all really, that is just how difficult naming 235 different shades is.

I was fooling myself without using a Long wave UV Light to confirm dated stamps to a shade group. Changelings can be seen at an instant with the many UV colours swirled intermixed. Most of the UV reactions look like the colours of different coral it is very pleasing to the eye.

There are 4 different ways that people see colours. My wife's eye is the same as the BW catalogue descriptions and has helped me greatly with her artistic eye. It has not been an easily learnt stamp to collect this is a big reason I like to collect them.

Hi Jim!
This was sent to me this week from Renniks Publications PTY Limited
Unit 3, 37/39 Green Street Banksmeadow NSW 2019 (02)96957355.
He sells Lighthouse products which is the image.
I use a bank of 10x 4watt lights. 3 lights should be enough room to work with. If posted he will not use stamps.

Kevin Morgan Stamps and Coins (03)97290082 Should stock them as well. He uses stamps for postage.

These lights come with a German power plug which needs to be changed.
