I was looking for the Killer Cnacel thread to post this on and I couldn't find it so I just restarted it here. I found this one while working on the box of stamps Mike sent me, and figured it would fit perfectly into the Killer Cancel category. This looks like the cancel ink had some major reactions with the ink the stamp was printed with.

Hi Richard....
I don't think it's an ink reaction.....it looks more like the canceling machinery scraped it, then it was canceled and rubbed on something before the ink was dry. |

sometimes it makes me sad to see such beautiful stamps that are killed with such heavy cancels, but on the other hand they make for an interesting collection topic in themselves. I know I have some more I will search thru stuff and see what I can find. |

As with my airplanes and motorcycles I have found more killer cancels and hope to have them posted soon. Keep checking back and in the mean time let's see some more of your killer cancels. |

Isn't it amazing that with all the advancements in technology, cancels in the US these days are generally ugly or destroy the collectability of modern stamps? |

Yes it is Greg. You would think they would do something about it but I feel there thinking is more towards quantity not quality. The world is dang fast paced now of days it's not funny and because of that more and more things are suffering and just getting the "Ok it's done let it go no matter what it looks like." treatment. |

Quantity and not quality is certainly right Cimarron. If you look at the modern German canellations though, they are "artistic," clean and neatly applied. And, they don't seem to destroy nearly as many stamps/covers. |

But guys, its the cancel that makes the stamp different, unique. Only on CTOs do you see the faint thin lined printed with the stamp cancel. I don't like big killer cancels either, but that might mark a $100 stamp down to $10. A SON ( sock on nose) cancel might raise the $100 to $150. A fancy or red or blue cancel might raise it even more. Part of the "grading" process.

In Holland you go to the post office and a girl sitting at the counter puts a nice cancel on your envelope without asking..which brings up the question ...why does everyone stand in America..you go to a post office or a food market in Europe and the cashier is allowed to sit at the register..pack your own stuff..we are backwards in some respects ! |

Another ugly one ... but I guess U.S. parcel post stamps were noted for heavy cancels ... either that or the postal clerk didn't like the subject matter (the automobile!): |
