while trolling the internet I sometimes see an item that seems to have too low a bid...i usually am not too interested in the item but do not want to see it go for peanuts...so I bid the item up a bit..its fun and a bit of a gamble...any one else guilty of this or do I just have a sadistic streak ???

Do you actually hope to win the item at a low price or are you just trying to make the eventual purchaser pay more for the item?

If the former, I do that myself and have no problem with it.

If the latter, I suggest you stop the practice as one of your SCF colleagues may be the one who ends up having to pay more for the item because of it.

I often bid on an item I don't need or want just because it's a low price. Sometimes I am lucky.

Guilty!

If the bid on the item is way too low and its a real nice copy, I'll put in a bid as well, but I'll usually put in a bid that I would if I was actually needing one. Unfortunately, I win too often and now have some real nice duplicates. One of these days I'm going to get rid of my duplicates and see how much I lost on them.

I always wondered why I did not get that 300 stamp deal for $1.50 and was out bid in the last 10 seconds and it sold for 1.75.

Isn't it always 25 or 50 cents that beats us ? Well I made one dealer happy just now...bid up 3 of his small collections a few bucks..but I was always outbid..when I do the math on the winning bid and the shipping I have to think twice or thrice !!

Another reason why sniping is a sensible approach to bidding on ebay...

I may have misunderstood the thrust of your posts but it seemed to me that you said you were bidding solely to raise a high bid that you believed was too low -- essentially acting as a shill bidder but without the knowledge of the seller.

Based on that understanding, I meant to suggest that the practice of running up the bid "for fun" rather than intent to win provided me with further justification to use sniping as a bidding technique.

I apologize if I have misread you.

Please no need to apologize..we all have our own views..actually I did feel like a shill for the guy..whoever he is..but the winning bids turned out to be so higher than mine that I am sure it made no difference to him !!
