This Aust KGV one penny red perfin "OS" was listed to sell with a starting price of US99c. Over the week it was at auction this stamp finally sold for US$36.70c.

Can anyone see why this stamp sold for so much? What am I not seeing?

KGV.

Don't know why it sold for that price, but I do have a different question -- what is the cause of that red "line" at the top and right margins?

Hi!khj.

They are called marginal lines. Because so many penny reds were printed at the same time build ups of ink make this common variety. A stamp has to have marginal lines on 3 or 4 sides of the stamp to become something that is uncommon and worth a bit more than normal.

Yvert&Tellier 1978, under Australia `Timbres des service`(BOB):

-nr. 15 = OS perfin on nr.20 (One penny red, perf.14, wmk. Type III crown on A) CV. used is 0,50 fr.
-nr.25A = OS perfin on nr.33 (One penny red, wmk. Type IV multiple crown on A) CV. used is 8,00 fr.

Maybe it`s Y&T 25A? CV is a bit old, still there`s a significant difference....
About the basic stamps: Nr. 20 according Y&T was issued bw.1914-23, Nr.33 bw.1918-20.

Good point Wadmalatz.
The description said the stamp is a single watermark and not Large multiple. Also in the description it says the stamp has a perforation comb 14. So this stamp can not be a singe line perforation.

The red lines in the margins are also known in Australia as compartment lines.

I suppose someone either got what he wanted or got caught up in the bidding frenzy. I hope he got the
item he needed. A lot of times bids on ebay are insane, but if you got the money and don't care, you get the item.

Actually, the high price might be explained by the two strong compartment lines. They are usually listed and priced in the Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue, and they do have a following among specialists. And I'm not going to even attempt to identify the shade, but who knows? Perhaps it's a rare shade with the OS perfin.
