I found a glassine going through a manilla envelope that I keep the empty ones in and found a glassine envelope with quite a few of these in it. I'm not sure exactly where they came from but I would have to guess from my Great-Grandfather (on my Mom's side) as he was a stamp collector (mostly World Wide stuff)and last winter my Grandmother gave me a bunch of the US stuff before she sold her house and property at auction. It must have got mixed in with the empties is all I can figure?

Whoa! Very very very nice find!

In the Scott catalog, US #O34(1873). If it is gummed, then catalog value is the 4-digit range!

Yup full original gummed and never hinged. Are you serious? Hmmm wanna buy it? lol

seriously though, That one is the highest denomination as the rest are from 2˘ - 24˘ from the looks of it. I'll have to carefully sort these out then. Thank you for the info I found the section now.

I don't have my most recent Scott catalog with me. In the 2009 Scott catalog, US #O34 is $4600 in mint never hinged condition. I only had 3 hours of sleep and I don't mess around very much with US BOB, so hopefully someone can confirm my ID.

Nice find!

Can't see how it can be anything other than an O34 My 2011 Scott pocket catalog lists it as $1900 unused $900 used

My 2011 Scott Specialized doesn't even list a value for a #O34 in MNH condition. Rather, the stamp is listed at $1900.00 (mint) and $900.00 (used). MNH listed as [ - ].

I am no professional as it comes to stamp grading, and while I am the first to admit this is very nice find, I just point out that the above scanned example looks as if it may have a cancellation of some sort which would explain the darker appearance toward the top of the stamp. Of course, it may also be just toning. It is also off-center. Just keep these details in mind, as it will likely affect its value were it professionally expertized for a grading.

So you think I should shell out the cash to get it certified? I guess I hadn't realized the potential of these- heck, I couldn't even locate them in my scott catalog for pete sake! I have a few more of varying denominations as well. all in similar condition. most have gum. I'll sort through them and do a proper scan in a bit. the phone pic dosen't do it justice.

Scott replaced the price with a dash in 2010. I don't know the specific reason.

The stamp does appear to be quite dirty in certain areas, and that will reduce the value significantly. However, he said:

So I quoted the MNH price.

Expertization with certificate from Bill Weiss would only cost you $20 (plus shipping). However, I wouldn't bother unless I was planning on selling the stamp (my opinion).

Not even a consideration to sell them as these were my Great Grandfathers and I'm just going to put them up and give them to my daughter with the rest of my stuff. Thank you for the info though. -Jay

The odds of it really being MNH and not regummed (with or without cleaned cancel) are slight. That said, I second the recommendation of sending it to Bill Weiss for a $20 cert. That at least will get you pointed in the right direction without absorbing the hit of a PF cert. In the event you ever do decide to part with it down the line, *THEN* you can get a PF cert.

After close inspection it does not have gum but it does have a shiny and very dirty back. It might be damaged and I'm tempted to soak it to see under the dirt. Actually thinking it's a trimmed large (and old) hinge of some type holding something together?
After sorting them I have the following all used and very grimy O15-23, O25,27,28 O30,32,34 O37,38,44 O47,O52.

Let me get them soaked and pressed and put into a vario page then you'll see what I'm talking about.

Do Not Soak if they have original gum and are mint. That would ruin any value they have (catalogue price wise that is).

Ooops, sorry, I paniced. I had read about the first one and then missed you saying about the used ones.
