Found this item among a group of 19th Century British stamps. I have little knowledge about them, but was able identify all the others. This doesn't appear to be a postage stamp, and I'm at a loss as to what it could be. Any ideas out there.
Hi, as khj said, it is a Queen Victoria fiscal stamp generally used for official purpose, but known postally used as well. You will find it towards the back of the GB section in one of the more detailed Stanley Gibbons stamp catalogues. Sorry I do not have any American or other catalogues so cannot tell you where else to look for it. This design was first printed in 1855, colour is reddish lilac, sometimes very pale, there are two anchor style watermarks, the paper is sometimes 'blued'. There are several similar designs in a blue or light brown colour. Good luck with your collecting.
