Reaction to the end of an era is mixed. Feelings later can range from indifference to nostalgia. Many stamp designs were based on the mission and accomplishments of NASA.

The shutting down of NASA definitely would have a nostalgic effect on my wife since she used to work in the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL and has many souvenirs from those years.

What impact would the closing of the United States Post Office have on us, the stamp collecting community? What about the general public? Would other country postal systems also shut down? The ability to send a physical item acorss the country ... no, across the WORLD, has been doable for many scores of years, but I imagine with little thought as to the effort involved in being able to do so. Just as NASA, few have little idea as to what goes on "behind the scenes" to make an endeavor an accomplishment. I, for one, would find the closing of the USPS a saddening event and one which most people would little understand the impact until after the fact.

The fact that the closing of USPS is even on the table is mind boggling. Coupled with the fact that my birthday is in two weeks and I'll be closer to 30 than 20, I feel really old. I was babysitting the other day and the 6 year old thought I was telling a fib when I told her you used to have to be home to catch a phone call, sit by the phone, and remember the number!

I've posted this link before, but I think it sums it up the best as far as how we need the post office, while also providing a touch of nostalgia as to what would happen if the post office was no longer here:

Thats an interesting question. I believe that the final outcome will not be a shutdown but rather a downsizing of the USPS. Is there any other country in the world that dosent have a public mail system? After all, initially this type of service was a result of a natural monopoly!

Aashamilton, I feel your pain. Over the summer, I was with my nephew and he was telling my sister
that I had "one of those cool old style cameras that you have to send the thingie away to the lab before you can see the pictures". The "thingie" being film. Kids these days are so deprived!

BTW: Did you know Paul Mccartney was in a band before Wings? (lol)
