Rod, sorry as I don't have a catalog in front of me but they are in the back-of-book section in Portugal. They are the Camoen set of 1924 overprinted in either Red or Black. I just sold a few of my duplicates of some of the sets. The overprints ran from 1927 - 1935 (I think those years are correct) https://goscf.com/t/19513 |

Yes, Stallzer, I wanted to buy yours but Marius' deep pockets beat me :)
They are not listed anywhere I can see, at least not in Gibbons.
They must be pure charity stamps.

I'll look more carefully a bit later, but I believe these are in Scott, behind the Portugal BOB listings, as issues for the Red Cross Society.
If no one else pipes up in the meantime, I'll let you know later today.
[edit: If I don't look now, I'll forget. You're showing #7 and #8 under the "For the Red Cross Society" section of franchise stamps.
1927, set of six (Scott 6-11), each with a CV of $1.10 in 2008. ] |

Yes, these are in Scott's under Portugal Franchise Stamps (supplied by the government to various charitable, scientific and military organizations for franking their correspondence. This privilege was withdrawn in 1938) The are SC# IS7 (48c) and IS8 (64c) 1927 for the Red Cross Society.
And pardon my ignorance, which is encyclopedic, but is Camoens winking at me, or did he loose an eye? |

Lets sort out the Scott editors' numbering decisions for the archives.
The other three "beneficiaries" of franchise stamps in Scott Classic are prefixed 2S, 3S and 4S, respectively. In the 2008 Classic, the Red Cross issues do not have a prefix. I'll check an older version later. Basically, has the prefix been added, or deleted? |

Rod, your two stamps are 1S7 and 1S8 in Scott. They are indeed the Camoen set of 1924 overprinted in either Red or Black. Full set of 6 stamps: 1S6/1S11 Hope this helps Edited* - These guys are soo fast! |

Okay, in the 2003 Scott Classic, there is a prefix of 1S to these stamps; in the 2008 Classic, no prefix.
Intentional? Typographical error? |

Quote: Basically, has the prefix been added, or deleted? That is an error that started in the 2006 Scott Classic and ONLY occurs in the Scott Classic. It does not occur in the Scott Standard Worldwide. I do not own a Scott Classic more recent than yours, so I do not know if the error has been corrected. |
